Data ink project
by Natalia Kiseleva (eolay)

I am incredibly fascinated by graphic projects based on data.

So as part of the practice, I decided to make small graphic data-arts on personal data.

I draw with a black fountain pen in a nice notebook.

Data ink #1

This work, inspired by the patterns on the table sets, contains data on the number of posts in my telegram dataviz blog for the year.

Flowers are months, petals - posts. Such is the cipher.

I like the round form of this image, but I'm not sure about the separate legend.

Next time I will try to combine the viz and the legend in one piece.
Data ink #2

Personal data is still easier to extract from sources where there is some data in digital form!

Now these are posts from my other telegram blog, which we have with Alex Bogachev - it is dedicated to data art.

I tried to insert a legend on the same sheet, its pros, its cons!
I really like plant motifs, but I need to try something more texturally dense next time.
Rocks? A tree?
Data ink #3 Waves of activity

This time I took the steps data.

At first I just wanted to try the idea, but in the end I liked the result. Although it turned out a little crooked - I usually draw without a pencil, right to the finish.

Despite the fuzzy coding (the waves are different by themselves), it is clear that the activity in the center is higher than at the top and bottom - I walked a lot during this period.
Data ink #4 Branches of communication

This time I plunged into the history of calls.
Choosing a small data set was not easy. I settled on such a rare method of communication as video messages, the so-called "circles".

In one of my chats, we actively use this method of communication! So I decided to collect data on them in one month. Week, day, time of day, duration and sender.

It didn't turn out exactly what I planned (and at first the legend was on the main sheet - but it didn't fit - I erased it in the PS), but the experience was interesting.
Data ink bonus!
Dungeons and Dragons data-sketch!

I like to play in D&D with my friends. And often, in order to remember funny moments, I draw sketches based on games!

Statistics on the number of my sketches correlate with the frequency of games, but not one hundred percent.

Campaigns are usually very long, they go on for years, some of them are official, some are copyrighted, our small D&D community has already nurtured several game masters.

This time it's not really data art, but I've been wanting to draw something like this for a very long time! Who also plays, share what you played! Only without spoilers! :D

Data ink #5 The first changes

I found an old archive with data on the first measurements of the child's weight. Here is such a small data-ink turned out on its basis.

Since the baby is very light, the weight was strictly monitored.
Here you can see the first standard weight rollback, and subsequent small gains, compensating for this rollback in the first days of a child's life.
Data ink #6 Warm swamp

I collected audio and video calls in WhatsApp with relatives over the past part of May 2023.

It turned out to be such a nice swamp.
The islands are relatives. Each stem is a call, the length of the stem is the duration of the call.

Soothing drawing.
Data ink #7 Adaptation. The first days in kindergarten

I think this period was not easy for many parents. The child goes to kindergarten, get sick, get sad.
At first they walk for several hours a day, then they stay for a nap.
Then they get sick again.

A very stressful period!
I have saved data on visits by week (vertical lines) and days of the week - from top to bottom.

Take care of yourself!

If you like this kind of projects - join my challenge!

Collect small personal data sets and draw them with ink.

Data-art: Mortality caused by road traffic injury
The theme of this data art is Mortality caused by road traffic injury. In the form of an ornate plant motif, data on deaths from road accidents in different European countries are encrypted, and other features of these countries are also hidden there. Details about the project can be found at the link!

Data-art "Family tree. The Mezen folk painting"
The theme of this data art is my small family tree. Patterns and symbols were taken from the Northern folk painting - Mezen. Each element in this work represents one of the closest family members. For more information about the decryption and description of the work, follow the link!
