Flowers and Numbers
Drawing Data by Hand
Data Art Workshop in St. Petersburg. January 2025
Our community, "Flowers and Numbers," held its second in-person event in January 2025, once again in St. Petersburg. The wonderful Liza joined us all the way from Serbia, so we decided to gather, chat, and create some data art in her honor!
This time, we skipped renting a room and opted for a cozy café. I brought along a couple of sketchbooks, two packs of markers, and a few inspiring data art books by Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec for creative sparks.

After plenty of conversation and a good meal, we began collecting data about ourselves—simple details like our work fields, years of experience, number of children and relatives, and various personal preferences.

Of course, we then used this data to create small data art projects. For many of us, this was the first-ever experience with data art, so we had to dive into the creative process in a short time. The results turned out great!
Some projects turned out black-and-white, while others were vibrant and colorful! I'm also sharing photos of the process so you can get a sense of the wonderful atmosphere that evening as we cozily created art in a café by the Christmas tree.

Later, a man from the neighboring table approached us, curious to find out what incredibly fascinating activity we were engaged in.
Oh yes! New data art enthusiasts are on the way! :D
It turned out to be such a heartfelt event! I hope we can host similar gatherings more often!

Our community already exists in various cities across our country and beyond, so I dream of having these meetups in Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan, the Urals, Europe, and other wonderful places!

Let’s meet, share experiences and inspiration! Creating together is so much more fun!

Data-postcards!
Our community is already international enough to be interested in where and who lives. We send postcards to each other, and also celebrate this fact, collecting data on the geographical location of the participants and the speed of the mail!

Community Data-Badges
It all started with this project in 2024. The first task within the framework of the data art practice was to make data badges based on a simple dataset about the skills of community members - personal badges of each participant. What came of it, see the link!

Data-walk
In June 2024, we had the first personal meeting of the St. Petersburg branch of the community. Since the community is international, this is a very good crowding! As part of the events, Ulyana organized a data walk, during which we collected data in order to visualize them later!
